The Design Story

The brief for this Dubai Creek Harbour apartment was a Japanese zen theme, and that intent runs through every room. The interior is built around a single unifying gesture: a timber slat ceiling that runs, uninterrupted, from the entryway through the open-plan living, dining and kitchen zones. The effect is closer to a Kyoto-inspired ryokan than a typical apartment fit-out — warm oak tones, soft cove lighting and a restrained cream-and-walnut palette carry the calm, uncluttered feel the client asked for through every space. In the living area, a low-profile boucle sectional and a live-edge wood coffee table sit beneath a full-height backlit joinery wall, where a slatted timber screen frames open display shelving styled with ceramics and a bonsai tree — a quiet nod to the zen brief. The dining space continues the theme under a cluster of woven rattan pendant lights, paired with cane-back chairs around a solid wood table. The kitchen contrasts handleless white cabinetry with dark wood-veneer uppers and a book-matched marble-effect waterfall island, while the primary bedroom is built around a timber-clad platform bed set into its own upholstered nook, lit by a circular backlit feature on the side wall. The ensuite and dressing room carry matte black tapware, a floating stone vanity and mirrored wardrobe fronts through to the finish. Custom joinery, layered lighting design and a cohesive material palette were central to translating that Japanese zen brief into a livable Dubai apartment — every space was designed to read as part of one continuous, calming story, not a series of disconnected rooms.
